In order to operate, your vehicle relies on the engine starter initiate the process. The solenoid, or in some cases, the threaded part of the armature, pushes the motor’s bendix gear forward about an inch, causing it to engage with the ring gear, which makes the starter motor spin the engine until the engine starts. Once the engine rpm surpasses the cranking speed, the bendix gear automatically retracts, and prevents the engine from spinning the starter too fast. Starter motor failure is usually the result of an issue with the bendix gear or the solenoid.
Symptoms that your engine starter is failing:
- Slow engine turn over
- Nothing happens at start up
- Strange noises when trying to start vehicle
When an engine starter goes bad, the engine will not crank properly when the ignition key is turned, or may not crank at all.
Our expert technicians will:
- Inspect the starter and ignition switch
- Remove and replace starter if compromised
- Test for power going to starter
- Inspect the starter relay, grounds, supply cables and battery

How do I know if the problem is the engine starter?
If you all you hear is a ‘click’ when you attempt to start your engine, it could mean that the starter is malfunctioning. Other problems that can inhibit starting the engine are bad spark plugs or a dead battery. These possibilities should be checked, and if they are not the cause, the engine starter is probably the culprit.
